- In Japan, Chiba prefecture and southward on the Pacific side. Akita prefecture and southward on the Japan Sea side. Other distribution areas include from Indian Ocean to West Pacific Ocean and Taiwan.

- This species inhabits grassy areas around coasts and the middle to the lower portion of streams, or embankments and wetlands. This species is found where Chiromantes haematocheir inhabits, but unevenness and number of teeth on its carapace help to identify the species. The body colors vary among individuals from reddish-brown to blackish-red.
