Japanese common name was named after the shape of its leaves since the appearance look like fans that are used by Sumo wrestling referee. Okinawan common name is named after the traditional story that if someone picks the flowers, it will rain. From September to October, this species produces reddish-purple blossoms. The seed is has a hard shell but inside is hollow, so it floats and distributed by current in the oceans.
