Species Distribution
Widely distributed in temperate zone of Eurasia. In Japan, this species is known as a non-migratory bird in middle Honshu and southward. It is known as a summer bird in northern Japan.
Okinawa Red List of Threatened Species:Near Threatened
This species is found close to freshwater such as rivers, ponds, and water reservoirs. It is good at diving into water feeding on small fish, shellfish, and aquatic insects. It nests by entwining water plants on a part of lifted driftwood and the family of Poaceae that is exposed from water surface. Juveniles are raised in the nests.
