This species is found in brackish water where freshwater and saltwater is mixed in an area. In Okinawa, it is found only in limited areas such as northern to middle area of Okinawa Island, Ishigaki Island, Yonaguni Island, Ishigaki Island, and Iriomote Island. Shiokawa River, where natural habitat of Ruppia maritima, located in Motobu Peninsula, is registered as national natural monument. The river is uncommon among rivers all over the world because water that wells up from the river is salty water.
