- This is a subspecies of Goniurosaurus kuroiwae kuroiiwae that is endemic to Kumejima Island. Yamashina’s Ground Gecko stores fat in its tail to survive through periods when food is scarce. Therefore, fat-tailed individuals are found. When it faces its enemies, it sticks its tail up to threaten them.
