- Non-migratory bird. From South Asia to New Zealand, which is the southernmost of distribution area.
- Its Japanese common name, Kurosagi, implies black birds, but there are two types, black-colored and white ones. In Okinawa, both can be found. Solitary white herons found along coasts is often a white type of Egretta sacra.
