- Within Japan, it can be found near Amamioshima, Okinoerabujima, Kagoshima prefecture, Okinawa and Miyako Islands. Overseas, distribution is from Southeast Asia from Taiwan to Indonesia.

- In Nansei Islands and southward, this species inhabits with closely related species, Marsilea quadrifolia. If the ground is wet enough, this species can live above ground, too, but it is an aquatic fern that grows in water.
