This species is only found in forests in the northern part of Okinawa Island. Both males and females have heads with red tops, but male head turns dark brown when it becomes an adult. During breeding season, it builds a nest in broad-leaved trees by making a burrow with its strong beak. It mates with the same individual every year. The species mainly feeds on insects and spiders, but also feeds on tree nuts.
