- This is an endemic species of the Ryukyu Islands. The species grows in the wild on rocks and cliffs around coastal areas. Before around 1980, it was prolific in Nago city and northward; however, the plant population has drastically decreased since then. Coastal development and over-collection of the species for the purpose of horticulture are considered to be among the top factors causing its decline.
