- It used to be considered the same species as Gekko hokouensis, but a genetic study showed divergence. Its taxonomy is still unclear, but the current Japanese common name is "Okinawa yamori”. Differences such as a purple-colored tongue or many blackish spots on its throat distinguish it from Gekko hokouensis.
