- This is an endemic species found in Ryukyu Islands. It naturally grows in nutrient-deficient fields and well-lit forest beds populated with short Pinus lunchuensis trees. Land development and habitat invasion by exotic species, Sphagneticola trilobata, are reducing its habitat areas.
