Reddish-dark brown thick spines are hollow. It is a nocturnal anima and stays in rock shelters during daytime. At nighttime, Red Slate Pencil Urchin moves around to feed on algae on rocks. This species is also popular as ornamental use, thick and strong spines are used for accessories and wind chimes.
