- It is a vine that grows to cover rocks and tree trunks. Its blooms are characterized by multiple flowers coming together to form globe shapes. Japanese common name, Sakura Ran, is derived from the species’ prominent characteristics. The color of its flower is similar to that of cherry blossom (Sakura), and its leaf looks like orchid (Ran). Okinawan common name, Kamisashi-bana, comes from its resemblance of hairpins used by men during the Ryukyu Kingdom era.
