In Okinawa prefecture, Iriomote, Ishigaki, Kume and Okinawa Islands. Other distribution areas include area from Amamioshima Island to Indo-West Pacific.

Japanese common name was named after its black and white-colored pepper and salt pattern. This species can be found in areas such as estuaries, mangrove forests, bedrocks with mud accumulation, and tidal flats with a mixture of sand, mud and gravel.
