- Echinothrix calamaris is a big sea urchin. Thick spines have fine short thorns on its surface with black and white stripe patterns. Diadema setousum has a similar appearance, but D. setousum has irregular short thorns. Its Japanese common name came from its anus shape’s similarity to that of Japanese sake server, tokkuri.
